Island operation tests

Many industries with power generation could provide their process with electric energy without any need of external power. Running a small power grid, not connected to the transmission system, i.e. island operation, puts high demands on the control system. To assure these demands theoretical studies and simulations are combined with tests on site.

Since the year 2000 Solvina has carried out island operation tests using the unique testing equipment SSPS at over 50 power producing stations in Sweden and abroad. The method gives a unique possibility to optimize the control parameters of the power plant as well as to identify defections in the entire control loop including the control system, hydraulic, turbines and indicators.

SSPS has been used in widely different areas:

  • To ensure production at paper mills and steel industries using internal electric power production.
  • To test new turbines and control systems.
  • To assure island operation in regions for readiness purposes.
  • To develop power plant models.
  •

The SSPS method has been developed in cooperation with Svenska Kraftnät and fulfils their high safety demands.
